in february, 1949 mount scopus memorial college opened its st kilda rd doors with a mere 143 students, with a dream of establishing a school where all jewish children, regardless of means, could attend to learn of their heritage, be proud jews and be dedicated supporters of israel whilst understanding their role in australian society.
amidst opposition from a community grappling with an influx of holocaust survivors, our founders heeded the motto of our college: 'chazak ve'ematz' - be strong and of good courage, to establish the proud place of learning that is mount scopus memorial college.
from the very beginning, our students' academic achievements have been held in high esteem and as the college’s popularity grew, so did the need for additional space and resources. in 1953 we relocated and expanded to a larger premises in burwood where we still reside today, while two junior campuses, closer to the jewish centre of melbourne cater for our younger students.
over 70 years since opening, as one of the most respected jewish day schools in the world, we offer educationally enriching programs, supported by highly dedicated staff and world class facilities.
as the only jewish school in melbourne to offer the international baccalaureate's primary years and middle years programmes, our inquiry-based learning focuses on fostering curiosity and developing critical and creative thinkers. they grow to become independent learners and problem solvers to create a lifetime of opportunity ahead.
staying true to the dream of our founders all those years ago, the college continues to strive to provide a scopus experience for all jewish children.
